The municipality of Trelleborg and Trelleborg Energy AB have signed an agreement together with Everfuel for development of a new hydrogen station. The agreement is the first of eight potential stations in the Nordic Hydrogen Corridor project (NHC), which is co-financed by the European Union’s CEF-program.

Nordic Hydrogen Corridor includes implementation of eight new hydrogen refueling stations (HRS), one hydrogen production unit and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) along the TEN-T core network in Sweden in the period 2017-2023. The project enables zero emission transport between Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, the capitals of the Nordic countries. The agreement between the municipality of Trelleborg and Everfuel is an important move for further development of hydrogen stations in Sweden. Seven other cities have shown interest in signing an agreement for refueling station within the NHC-project.

The Municipality has made a firm commitment to a daily off take of up to 120 kg per day. The partners have a joint ambition to grow the market to 500 kg per day within five years of operation.

Through an implementation of a fleet of hydrogen vehicles, Trelleborg Municipality paves the way for establishing a hydrogen station in the city. With Trelleborg’s strategic position in Sweden there is a promising market potential with 750 000 heavy duty vehicles passing through the city every year and this number is expected to significantly increase the coming years.

– Trelleborg is a starting point for the scale-up, and we are committed to lead the role-out of solutions at scale for hydrogen production, distribution, and fueling to end-customers” says Jacob Krogsgaard, CEO at Everfuel.

– I am thrilled and very proud that Trelleborg Municipality is the first one out in this project. This is one of the steps that Trelleborg takes in the total shift of technology and new solutions that we all have to be part of to meet the future in a sustainable way, says Mikael Rubin Mayor/ Municipality chairman of the municipal board of Trelleborg

– It feels wonderful to go from power-point into action when taking the first step to implement hydrogen as an enabler towards a greener Trelleborg says Magnus Sahlin CEO, Trelleborgs Energi AB.

– This is a very important milestone in the Nordic Hydrogen Corridor project as well as in the Swedish roll-out of hydrogen refueling stations. It’s the first new station in our second phase of hydrogen infrastructure for transport and it’s in perfect timing for the updated EU-directives for clean vehicles and alternative fuels. It’s great to see how cities like Trelleborg put hydrogen as one important brick in the creation of a more sustainable society, says Björn Aronsson CEO Hydrogen Sweden.

Swedish hydrogen strategy for supporting the expansion of infrastructure is underway

On behalf of the government, Swedish Energy Agency is working on a national hydrogen strategy to be
finalized the 31st of July 2021. This is very timely for supporting the EU's ambitions to expand hydrogen
infrastructure. The trade association, Hydrogen Sweden, is leading the EU-funded project Nordic Hydrogen
Corridor (NHC) project. The ambition is to bind the Nordic capitals together through emission-free transport.
The three municipalities of Trelleborg, Uddevalla and Markaryd have expressed interest in working with the
NHC project.
As part of the "Green Deal” and the transition to a climate-neutral and competitive economy, the EU presented
its hydrogen strategy this summer, together with funding of more than EUR 400 billion. The Nordic Hydrogen
Corridor is part of the major EU initiative channeled via the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which will support
investments in infrastructure. In order to achieve its climate targets, the EU is investing heavily in hydrogen gas
infrastructure and fuel cell vehicles. Fuel cell vehicles are electric vehicles that produce their own electricity
from hydrogen gas while in motion. Hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles emit only water vapour.

"There's a great deal of interest in emission-free transport and innovative technology, and many municipalities
want to join the Nordic Hydrogen Corridor. We are seeing increasing interest in the hydrogen technology, not
least due to the Swedish Energy Agency is formulating a hydrogen strategy that hopefully will show hydrogen ́s
role in a sustainable society and the importance of the electrification of the transport sector," says Project
Manager for NHC, Pawel Seremak.
